Spoiler-Free Review: Agatha All Along — A Bewitching New Marvel Series

I had the incredible opportunity to attend a special screening of Agatha All Along at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, hosted by Marvel Television and Fandango, where I previewed the first two episodes. Set after the events of WandaVision, this series follows the mischievous and mysterious Agatha Harkness as she embarks on a quest to regain her former powers. The show officially premieres on Disney+ on September 18th, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday until October 30.

Bewitching Storyline and Unsettling Vibes

From the very beginning, Agatha All Along pulls viewers into an eerie, almost hypnotic atmosphere where nothing feels quite right—even when you feel like you're following the slow but steady intro of the story. Agatha (played by the ever-talented Katherine Hahn) seems just as disoriented as the audience at times, which adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. In my opinion, Hahn's portrayal captures a character caught between moments of sharp clarity and a confusing haze. The storyline, while initially playful and full of comic references, quickly takes a darker turn, revealing that there’s more at stake than it seems. As a mother of four (ages 11, 9, and 7), I can definitely say this series has the potential to stir up some sleepless nights with its haunting undertones and visual jump scares!

Standout Performances

Katherine Hahn elevates and excels at balancing Agatha's witty, confident persona with her moments of confusion, as if Agatha herself is unsure of her own existence at times. Hahn’s ability to keep us guessing is one of the show’s strongest points, as we along with Agatha are often snapped back into stark realities hidden in plain sight. Joe Locke’s introduction as a goth teen sidekick to Agatha brings a welcome dynamic of humor and confusion. Locke’s character—wrapped in mystery—adds both tension and comic relief to the series, especially in his interactions with a confused and temporarily hard of hearing Agatha.

As the episodes unfold, we’re introduced to new characters, like the Rio Vidal (an original addition, not from the comics). The references to past tensions of a previous relationship between Agatha and Rio brings a deeper dimension to the plot, adding yet another layer of mystery to the story. While Agatha playfully recruits unlikely allies to help her regain her powers, it’s clear that something much darker is on the horizon.

Tonal Shift & Story Progression

While the first episode introduces us to witty banter, laugh-out-loud puns, and the dry humor that only Katherine Hahn can deliver, by the second episode, Agatha All Along takes a turn. We move from quirky and comedic moments to darker, more ominous tones with hints of implied horror. Visuals start to feel reminiscent of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, blending a sense of impending doom with jump scares and ominous storytelling. Marvel fans will appreciate the intricate references to the comics, though younger viewers may find the tone unsettling. For my older kids, the Marvel references and engaging story would definitely hold their attention, but I’m hesitant to let them dive in completely due to the dark themes and hauntingly eerie direction the series seems to be headed.

What Lies Ahead

From what I gathered, Agatha All Along seems poised to deliver a layered, complex story that weaves magic, mystery, and Marvel history together. While the pacing starts off a bit slow, the show doesn’t take itself too seriously, keeping the audience entertained while offering deeper, PG-13 themes. Agatha’s determination to walk the Witches' Road, as she recruits a coven to face trials and regain her powers, adds an exciting mystical twist that will certainly draw in fans of both WandaVision and the broader Marvel Universe.

Final Thoughts

It's spooky season, and if you loved WandaVision or enjoy darker Marvel stories with a dash of dry humor and supernatural intrigue, Agatha All Along will be right up your alley. The first two episodes tease a thrilling ride, full of twists, magical undertones, and characters that promise to evolve as the series progresses. Katherine Hahn once again proves she’s the perfect lead for this bewitching tale, and with new episodes premiering weekly, it’s going to be hard to wait to see what’s next!
